TRUMP’S LETTER TO TINUBU PROVES U.S.-NIGERIA COOPERATION IS YIELDING RESULTS — PRESIDENCY

The Presidency has said a letter of commendation from United States President Donald Trump to President Bola Tinubu demonstrates the positive outcomes of the growing security partnership between Nigeria and the United States.

Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Special Adviser to the President on Policy Communication, Daniel Bwala, said attention should be placed on the significance of the letter rather than the date it was made public.

According to Bwala, the correspondence reflects international acknowledgment of the Tinubu administration’s efforts to strengthen security cooperation with the United States and the progress achieved through the partnership.

He explained that the enhanced collaboration between both countries has led to improved intelligence sharing, joint military operations, and specialised training for Nigerian security personnel. He also noted that the cooperation contributed to successful counterterrorism operations, including the elimination of a senior ISIS figure and the prevention of planned attacks.

Bwala added that the letter serves as evidence of the steady improvement in diplomatic and security relations between Nigeria and the United States, while noting that similar progress is being made with other international partners.

When asked about President Tinubu’s reaction to the message, the presidential aide said the contents of the letter clearly demonstrate the achievements recorded through the bilateral relationship and reaffirm Nigeria’s commitment to sustaining the collaboration.

Addressing questions over why the July 6, 2026 letter was only released publicly on July 22, Bwala dismissed concerns about the timing, insisting that the focus should remain on the message and its implications for national security and international cooperation.

He further stated that the administration remains committed to addressing insecurity and believes many Nigerians are already seeing the benefits of ongoing security reforms.

The letter released by the Presidency praised President Tinubu’s leadership in combating terrorism and protecting vulnerable communities. It also reaffirmed the commitment of both nations to deepen their partnership under the 2026 Defence Cooperation Roadmap, which includes expanded intelligence sharing, military training, and joint counterterrorism operations.
