ALLEGED UNLAWFUL NAIRA REDESIGN: ABSENCE OF EMEFIELE, COUNSEL STALLS TRIAL

The trial of former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Godwin Emefiele, over the alleged unlawful redesign of the naira was adjourned on Thursday after both the defendant and his lead counsel failed to appear in court.

The case, which is before Justice Maryanne Anenih of the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Maitama, Abuja, could not proceed due to their absence.

During the proceedings, prosecution counsel Abbas Mohammed informed the court that although the prosecution’s witnesses, including one from the Federal Ministry of Finance, were present, Emefiele and his lawyer, Olalekan Ojo (SAN), were not in attendance.

Mohammed told the court that he had spoken with the defence counsel, who claimed they were unaware of the scheduled hearing date. He subsequently requested a fresh date to allow the prosecution present its witnesses.

Following the application, Justice Anenih adjourned the matter to October 6 and 7, 2026, for the continuation of the trial.

Emefiele is facing a four-count charge filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), which accuses him of disobeying lawful directives and carrying out actions linked to the controversial naira redesign policy that allegedly caused hardship to members of the public.
