According to a statement from the Ministry, she was warmly received on Friday by senior officials at the ministry’s headquarters in Abuja, including directors and heads of key foreign policy agencies.

Her reception was led by the Permanent Secretary, Ambassador Dunoma Umar Ahmed, alongside leaders of institutions under the ministry such as the Directorate of Technical Cooperation in Africa, the Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution, the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs, the Technical Aid Corps, and the Foreign Service Academy.

Transition and leadership backing

Officials at the ministry described her appointment as a reflection of her experience and service in Nigeria’s diplomatic space. The Permanent Secretary assured her of full institutional support, stressing continuity in Nigeria’s foreign policy priorities such as:

  • strengthening bilateral and multilateral relations
  • protecting Nigerians abroad
  • attracting foreign investment
  • advancing peace and security cooperation

Foreign policy direction

In her remarks, Odumegwu-Ojukwu reaffirmed commitment to Nigeria’s evolving diplomatic framework built around the administration’s “4D Foreign Policy” agenda — focusing on Democracy, Development, Diaspora, and Demography.

She also emphasized “citizen diplomacy” and strategic autonomy as guiding principles in Nigeria’s global engagement, while calling for stronger institutional coordination and professionalism within the ministry.

Outlook

Her assumption of office signals continuity in Nigeria’s foreign policy direction at a time when global diplomacy is increasingly shaped by economic competition, diaspora engagement, and regional security challenges.

The ministry noted that she will work closely with senior officials to ensure effective implementation of Nigeria’s foreign policy goals and improved welfare for Nigerians living abroad.
