Sirika made the announcement on Friday at the All Progressives Congress (APC) secretariat in Katsina, stating that he entered the race after encouragement from his supporters. He said his focus, if elected, would be to improve living conditions in the senatorial district.

He previously served in the House of Representatives from 2003 to 2007 and was later elected to the Senate in 2011.

During his tenure as aviation minister, Sirika oversaw the unveiling of Nigeria Air in 2023, a project that generated widespread public debate over its ownership structure, which included Ethiopian Airlines and Nigerian investors.

He is currently facing prosecution by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over allegations of abuse of office and the award of multi-billion-naira contracts to relatives while in office.
