EKITI 2026: PDP FLAGBEARER REJECTS ‘APC CORONATION’ NARRATIVE

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in Ekiti State, Oluwole Oluyede, has rejected suggestions that the upcoming governorship election in the state is already decided, insisting that the process will be competitive and reflective of the people’s democratic choice.

Oluyede stated that Ekiti State operates under Nigeria’s constitutional democracy, stressing that the June 20 election is not a formality or ceremonial approval for any candidate but a genuine contest involving multiple political parties and contenders.

In a statement released through his media aide, Gani Salau, in Ado Ekiti, he responded to claims suggesting that the election would simply affirm Governor Biodun Oyebanji’s bid for a second term under the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Thirteen political parties are expected to participate in the governorship election, including the incumbent governor.

Oluyede criticized narratives describing the poll as a “coronation,” describing such claims as misleading, undemocratic, and capable of discouraging voter participation. He warned that presenting the outcome as already decided undermines the credibility of the electoral process.

He emphasized that Ekiti voters are known for independent decision-making and should not be treated as passive participants in shaping their political future. According to him, the election should be seen as a contest of ideas, leadership capacity, and public trust.

The PDP candidate also challenged claims of flawless governance in the state, arguing that residents still face issues such as unemployment, weak support for small businesses, and infrastructural gaps in rural areas.

He maintained that opposition parties play a critical role in democracy by ensuring accountability and providing alternatives, rejecting any attempt to label them as irrelevant in the political space.

Oluyede called on political actors, the media, security agencies, and the Independent National Electoral Commission to ensure a free, fair, and transparent election. He also urged residents to participate actively without fear or intimidation.

He concluded that the June 20 election would not be a coronation but a democratic decision made by the people of Ekiti State.
