The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has clarified its position on airport cab operations, vehicle upgrade requirements and revised operational charges, amid concerns raised by some operators across the country’s airports.
In a public statement issued on June 22, FAAN said it is considering a final extension of the deadline for airport taxi operators to upgrade their vehicles to meet new service standards aimed at improving passenger experience and aligning airport transport services with global best practices.

According to the authority, discussions on the vehicle upgrade policy began in July 2024, with operators given multiple opportunities to comply. The initial deadline was first extended to January 2026 and later to June 2026 following appeals from stakeholders citing economic challenges.
FAAN stated that it is now weighing a final extension until October 2026, describing it as an additional opportunity for operators to meet the required standards.
The agency explained that the vehicle upgrade programme is part of broader reforms designed to improve safety, comfort, reliability and overall service quality at Nigerian airports. It noted that airport transport services often provide visitors and travellers with their first and last impressions of the country.
Addressing concerns over increased operational charges, FAAN defended the adjustment from ₦500 to ₦1,500, noting that the previous rate had remained unchanged for more than eight years despite inflation, rising operational costs and broader economic realities.

The authority maintained that the revised fee is necessary to support airport infrastructure, sustain quality service delivery and ensure efficient airport operations.
FAAN also rejected allegations that stakeholders were not consulted before the implementation of the reforms. It stated that it regularly engages licensed airport transport service providers through established channels and conducts its regulatory and contractual dealings directly with registered cab companies operating within airport premises.
The authority reiterated that the reforms are intended to enhance service delivery rather than penalise operators, while stressing that airport cab operators have been given ample time to prepare for compliance.
FAAN added that the proposed October 2026 deadline may be the final extension as it continues efforts to modernise airport services and improve passenger satisfaction across Nigeria’s aviation sector.
