FG FILES 13-COUNT TREASON CHARGE AGAINST ALLEGED COUP PLOTTERS

A group of six individuals, including senior retired military officers and a serving police inspector, are set to be arraigned over allegations bordering on treason, terrorism, and terrorism financing.

Among those named are a retired Major General, Mohammed Ibrahim Gana, a retired naval captain, Erasmus Ochegobia Victor, and a serving police inspector, Ahmed Ibrahim. Others listed in the charge are Zekeri Umoru, Bukar Kashim Goni, and Abdulkadir Sani.

The defendants are scheduled to appear on Wednesday, April 22, before Justice Joyce Abdulmalik of the Federal High Court Abuja.

According to the charge filed by the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation and signed by Director of Public Prosecutions Rotimi Oyedepo, the accused are alleged to have conspired in 2025 to undermine the Nigerian state and “levy war against the country.”

The prosecution further claims the defendants had prior knowledge of an alleged plan to commit treason but failed to report it to security authorities or take steps to prevent it.

They are also being prosecuted under the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022, for allegedly participating in meetings linked to activities aimed at destabilising Nigeria’s constitutional order.

Specific allegations include attending secret meetings, providing support for terrorist-related activities, and failing to disclose intelligence that could have prevented the alleged offences.

The charge also includes financial crime accusations, with prosecutors alleging that some of the defendants handled funds suspected to be proceeds of terrorism financing. These include claims of cash transactions ranging from ₦1 million to ₦50 million.

Also named in the charge, though reportedly at large, is former Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Timipre Sylva.

The case is the latest development in a broader investigation linked to an alleged coup plot that first gained public attention following the cancellation of Nigeria’s 65th Independence Day parade in October 2025.

While security agencies have confirmed arrests and ongoing investigations, the defendants are expected to enter their pleas when proceedings begin in court.
