Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, expressed Nigeria’s displeasure over what she described as hostile actions targeting black African migrants, noting that the situation is particularly sensitive given Nigeria’s historical support for South Africa during the anti-apartheid struggle.

She recalled Nigeria’s contributions to South Africa’s liberation movement, including financial support, advocacy, and international campaigns, stressing that Nigerians feel disappointed by the current treatment of their citizens.

According to her, reports indicate that black African migrants are being disproportionately affected, with incidents of harassment, looting, and destruction of businesses belonging to foreign nationals.

The minister stated that Nigeria is exploring possible responses, including retaliatory measures, though she noted that any final decision would require approval at the highest levels of government and legislative consideration.

She also raised concerns over the safety of Nigerians living in South Africa, saying many are being exposed to insecurity and lack adequate protection from local authorities.

The Federal Government has continued diplomatic engagement with South African authorities while monitoring the situation closely amid rising tensions linked to anti-immigrant protests in parts of the country.

In response, arrangements are also underway for voluntary repatriation, with over 1,000 Nigerians expected to return home under a coordinated support programme.
