FROM COMPASSION TO INNOVATION: UNILAG STUDENTS DEPLOY AI TO SUPPORT DISABLED LEARNERS

UNILAG Students Use AI Innovation to Promote Inclusion for Persons With Disabilities

The innovative project developed by students of the University of Lagos attracted admiration from Minister Sarai, who praised the team for using artificial intelligence to address real human challenges instead of simply following technological trends.

According to the minister, innovation becomes truly impactful when it improves lives, creates opportunities, and promotes inclusion for vulnerable members of society.

Beyond the technology itself, the project also highlighted a growing culture of innovation within the University of Lagos. Students across different disciplines are increasingly embracing research, collaboration, and creative thinking, not just for academic achievement, but as a means of solving pressing societal problems.

Speaking during the engagement, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos, Professor Folasade Ogunsola, reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to producing graduates equipped with both academic excellence and practical problem-solving skills.

She explained that the university is intentionally creating an environment where students are encouraged to think beyond classroom learning, collaborate across fields, and develop solutions capable of addressing both local and global challenges.

Professor Ogunsola expressed satisfaction with the level of creativity emerging from the AI UniPod, describing the initiative as proof of what young people can achieve when given the right support, mentorship, and opportunities.

She added that the university remains committed to strengthening innovation, research, and technology-driven initiatives that can contribute meaningfully to national development and human advancement.

Also speaking during the visit, Ms Attafuah revealed that the AI UniPod initiative is gradually expanding across Nigeria as part of efforts to empower young Nigerians to become drivers of sustainable innovation and development.

She disclosed that a similar innovation hub has already been launched in Nasarawa State with a focus on mining and resource development.

According to her, collaboration and knowledge-sharing partnerships are expected between the University of Lagos AI UniPod and other emerging innovation centres across the country to develop practical solutions to developmental challenges in different sectors.

However, beyond the official speeches and policy discussions, it was the story of Deborah Ujoade that stood out during the visit.

At a time when conversations around artificial intelligence are often centred on machines, automation, and futuristic systems, the University of Lagos is beginning to showcase another side of technology — one built on compassion, accessibility, and hope.

Within the AI UniPod, innovation is not only being used to improve systems but also to restore dignity, create opportunities, and remind persons living with disabilities that they have a place in the future being shaped by technology.

For Deborah Ujoade and the students behind the project, that future may only just be beginning.
