GERMANY WARNS OF US TROOP WITHDRAWAL, URGES EUROPE TO TAKE SECURITY RESPONSIBILITY

Germany’s Defence Minister, Boris Pistorius, has said it was “foreseeable” that the United States would reduce its military presence in Europe, following reports that Washington plans to withdraw thousands of troops from Germany.

His remarks came after the U.S. Defense Department announced plans to pull about 5,000 American troops from Germany within the next year, a move that has sparked renewed debate over Europe’s security responsibilities.

Pistorius stressed that Europe must take greater ownership of its defence needs, adding that Germany is already making progress in strengthening its security capabilities amid shifting global alliances.

The decision was confirmed by U.S. officials, with Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell explaining that the withdrawal follows a broader review of U.S. force posture in Europe and is expected to be completed within six to twelve months.

The development also comes amid wider tensions between Washington and European allies, including renewed trade disputes and political disagreements involving U.S. President Donald Trump, who has repeatedly pushed for Europe to contribute more to its own defence.

Analysts say the planned troop reduction could significantly impact Germany, which currently hosts tens of thousands of U.S. personnel and plays a central role in NATO’s European operations.
