King Charles III met former US President Donald Trump at the White House on Monday, marking the start of a closely watched state visit taking place amid rising diplomatic tensions between the United Kingdom and the United States.

The meeting began with a formal reception outside the White House South Portico, where both leaders exchanged greetings alongside First Lady Melania Trump. The royal couple, including Queen Camilla, were welcomed with ceremonial gestures as the visit officially commenced.

The four-day trip was originally intended to celebrate historic UK–US relations ahead of the 250th anniversary of American independence. However, it has been overshadowed by disagreements over foreign policy, particularly the ongoing conflict involving Iran, which has created friction between Washington and London.

Inside the White House, Trump hosted the royal couple for tea and a tour of the grounds, including the beehives maintained on the presidential lawn. The visit is being conducted under tight security following a recent shooting incident in Washington involving an alleged assassination attempt on Trump.
The programme includes a state dinner and a historic address by King Charles to the US Congress, making him the first British monarch to do so since Queen Elizabeth II in 1991. The visit will also extend to New York, where the King and Queen are scheduled to visit the 9/11 memorial before travelling onward to Bermuda.

Despite the ceremonial tone, political tensions remain visible. Trump has criticised UK policy on the Iran conflict and other domestic issues, while UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has defended Britain’s position and the importance of maintaining diplomatic ties.
Analysts say the visit is a delicate balancing act for King Charles, who is expected to address global tensions in carefully diplomatic language during his congressional speech.
