The Lagos State Government has rolled out the maiden edition of its “Care for the Elderly” programme in Badagry and Ibeju-Lekki Local Government Areas, as part of efforts to improve the welfare and wellbeing of senior citizens in the state.
The initiative, organised by the Office of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and implemented by Green Lunar Nigeria Limited, brought together over 500 residents aged 60 and above for a day of health checks, wellness support, and social engagement activities.
Speaking at the event, the Chairman of Badagry Local Government Area, Babatunde Adande Hunpe, commended Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for extending the programme to the community. He also praised the SDGs office for prioritising elderly welfare and urged that similar interventions be replicated across other parts of the state.

Hunpe further acknowledged the role of Green Lunar Nigeria Limited, describing the organisation’s coordination of the programme as effective and impactful.
The Special Adviser to the Governor on SDGs, Dr. Oreoluwa Finnih, said the initiative was designed to address the gap in structured support for elderly citizens at the community level.
She explained that while healthcare services formed the entry point of the programme, the broader goal is to ensure that older persons remain valued, supported, and actively included in community life.
Also speaking, the Director of Medical Services and Disease Control in Lagos State Health District V, Dr. Amina Ahmad-Bello, stressed the importance of routine medical care for the elderly. She highlighted common age-related health challenges such as hypertension, diabetes, and mobility issues, noting that early detection and consistent care remain essential.

She added that emotional and social wellbeing are equally important, urging families and communities to foster inclusion and stronger support systems for older persons.
The Chief Executive Officer of Green Lunar Nigeria Limited, Olaniyi Odina, expressed appreciation to residents for their turnout and cooperation, as well as to local authorities for their support.
He disclosed that the next phase of the programme would take place in Ibeju-Lekki, with plans to extend the initiative to more communities across Lagos State.
The event featured free medical consultations, health screenings, distribution of essential items, and interactive sessions focused on promoting healthy ageing among participants.
