Manchester United have opted out of participating in both the EFL Trophy and the National League Cup during the 2026-27 season as the club adjusts its youth development schedule.
The decision is linked to the club’s return to the UEFA Youth League following qualification for the Champions League, as well as a reduced number of players currently transitioning between the under-18 and under-21 levels.

United joined the EFL Trophy in 2019, several years after the competition was opened to academy teams from selected Premier League clubs. Despite previous praise for the tournament’s competitive value, the club has now decided to step away from both competitions for the upcoming campaign.

Last season, the club’s under-21 side failed to progress beyond the group stage of the EFL Trophy and was also knocked out during the league phase of the National League Cup. Across both tournaments, the team played 10 matches before the end of the year.

Attention will now shift to the UEFA Youth League, where the club is guaranteed at least eight matches. United will also maintain its involvement in the Premier League Under-21 International Cup, having reached the quarter-finals of the competition last season.
Club officials have indicated that a decision regarding participation in youth competitions for the 2027-28 season will be made at a later date.

Meanwhile, discussions are ongoing over a new agreement for the club’s under-21 manager, who returned to Old Trafford after a brief spell away. The move follows recent changes within the coaching structure, including the promotion of a former youth coach to the senior team setup.
