The decision was made during the Forum’s first meeting of 2026 held in Abuja, where governors also received presentations from the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, and the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, on tax reforms, revenue generation, and education sector expansion plans.

In a communiqué issued by its Chairman, Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq of Kwara State, the Forum reiterated its commitment to working closely with the Federal Government to strengthen fiscal management, improve revenue mobilisation, and enhance public services at the subnational level.

The governors discussed ongoing tax reforms, trends in Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) revenues, and the need to resolve outstanding fiscal issues affecting state budgeting and planning.

They also expressed support for efforts to expand the taxpayer base, improve compliance, and reduce pressure on essential consumption items while strengthening overall revenue systems.

On education, the Forum reviewed federal plans for a 12-year basic education structure, digital education management systems, and expansion of secondary school infrastructure to accommodate rising enrolment nationwide.

Governors pledged continued collaboration with the Federal Government to expand access to quality education and ensure better resource distribution across states.

A key highlight of the meeting was the approval of the NGF Leadership Academy, which will function as a dedicated platform for executive training, governance research, policy advisory, and peer learning among state leaders.

The Forum also noted progress on agricultural initiatives aimed at improving rice production and strengthening food security, as well as discussions around a proposed state police framework being developed in anticipation of constitutional reforms.

Overall, the governors emphasized the need for stronger institutional capacity at the state level to address economic pressures and improve governance outcomes across the country.
