NIGERIA TO BEGIN LARGE-SCALE LOCAL PRODUCTION OF WEAPONS WITHIN ONE YEAR – MUSA

Nigeria is preparing to begin large-scale domestic production of military equipment within the next year, with plans to supply the country’s armed forces and potentially export defence products to other African nations.

The Minister of Defence, Christopher Musa, disclosed this on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, following the maiden Africa International Defence Exhibition (AFRIDEX), which brought together government representatives, military institutions, defence manufacturers and technology experts.

Musa said the initiative was part of the Federal Government’s efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s defence industry, reduce dependence on imported military equipment and improve the country’s capacity to respond to security challenges.

According to the minister, the planned expansion would enable Nigeria to manufacture more of the equipment required by its armed forces while creating opportunities to serve other African countries.

He described the initiative as an important step towards developing a self-reliant defence sector and establishing Nigeria as a significant contributor to Africa’s military manufacturing industry.

GOVERNMENT TARGETS EXPANSION OF LOCAL DEFENCE MANUFACTURING

The defence minister explained that the government was pursuing several measures to increase domestic production, including investments in manufacturing facilities, technology transfer, research and development, and partnerships with international defence companies.

He identified the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON) as a central institution in the country’s efforts to expand its manufacturing capacity and meet the equipment requirements of the Nigerian military.

Nigeria currently relies heavily on foreign suppliers for much of its military hardware, including equipment sourced from countries such as the United States, France, Italy and China.

The proposed expansion is intended to strengthen local production capabilities and reduce the country’s dependence on overseas procurement.

Musa also encouraged international manufacturers and investors to explore opportunities in Nigeria’s defence sector, stressing the importance of partnerships that would strengthen domestic expertise and industrial capacity.

AFRIDEX TO PROMOTE DEFENCE PARTNERSHIPS

The minister said AFRIDEX would provide a platform for Nigeria and other African countries to establish stronger security partnerships, exchange technical knowledge and explore investment opportunities.

The exhibition brought together stakeholders across several defence-related fields, including land, air, maritime, space and cyber security.

It was designed to connect Africa’s security needs with the technology, expertise, financing and industrial capabilities required to address them.

Musa noted that cooperation between governments, defence institutions and private-sector manufacturers would be essential to developing sustainable production capacity across the continent.

He added that stronger partnerships could improve the exchange of expertise and support the development of equipment suited to Africa’s security requirements.

TINUBU’S ADMINISTRATION BACKS INDIGENOUS PRODUCTION

Musa expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for supporting initiatives aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s defence manufacturing sector.

He said sustained government backing would be important in expanding production capacity and ensuring that local manufacturers could contribute more effectively to national security.

The minister’s announcement comes as Nigeria continues to confront security threats, including insurgency, banditry and kidnapping, which have increased pressure on the armed forces to maintain adequate supplies of equipment and other essential resources.

Greater domestic manufacturing capacity could help improve access to military supplies, although the success of the initiative will depend on investment, technical expertise, production facilities and effective implementation.

NIGERIA SEEKS A GREATER ROLE IN AFRICA’S DEFENCE INDUSTRY

Beyond meeting domestic requirements, the Federal Government hopes that increased local production will create opportunities for Nigeria to supply defence equipment to other African countries.

Such exports could strengthen the country’s industrial base, create skilled employment and expand cooperation with regional partners.

However, achieving these objectives will require Nigeria to establish reliable production systems, maintain appropriate quality standards and demonstrate that locally manufactured equipment can meet the operational requirements of its intended users.

The announcement signals the government’s ambition to develop a stronger indigenous defence industry. Whether large-scale production begins within the proposed one-year timeframe will depend on how quickly the necessary investments, partnerships and manufacturing arrangements are put in place.
