NYSC REFORMS: ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT 11 SPECIALISED STREAMS, NEW CAMP STRUCTURE

The Federal Government has unveiled additional details of the newly approved reforms to the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), introducing a redesigned orientation programme, specialised career pathways and changes to the scheme’s leadership and deployment process.

The reforms, approved by the Federal Executive Council (FEC), represent the first comprehensive review of the NYSC since it was established in 1973, according to the Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande.

Providing further insight into the changes after the FEC meeting in Abuja, the Special Adviser to the President on Policy Coordination, Hadiza Bala Usman, said the six-week orientation programme will now be divided into three distinct phases.

The first two weeks will focus on civic responsibility, national values and leadership development. During the second phase, corps members will receive training in career planning, financial literacy, business development and access to funding, alongside a structured career engagement programme.

The final two weeks will be dedicated to specialised training based on the career stream selected by each corps member during registration, taking into account their academic qualifications, interests and skill set.

As part of the reform, every corps member will choose one of 11 specialised career streams, including Agric Corps, Medical Corps, Education Corps, Tech and Digital Corps, Legal Corps, Public Service Corps, Infrastructure Corps, Green Corps, Enterprise Corps, Creative Economy Corps, and Paramilitary and Security Corps.

According to Usman, the specialised streams are designed to equip participants with practical skills that align with workforce demands while improving career readiness after service.

The reforms also introduce a more security-conscious deployment process, with corps members’ postings taking prevailing security conditions into account.

Another major change is the transition to civilian leadership for the NYSC, while the military will continue providing security support during orientation camps and throughout the service year.

In addition, the government has approved a redesigned NYSC uniform intended to promote professionalism and national identity. The traditional Passing Out Parade will also be replaced with a formal graduation ceremony.

Orientation camps nationwide will undergo upgrades under a new grading and certification system aimed at ensuring uniform standards across all NYSC facilities.

Usman said the reforms cover every major aspect of the scheme, including registration, deployment, orientation, leadership and skills development, describing them as the most significant changes in the programme’s 53-year history.

To facilitate implementation, the Federal Executive Council has directed the Attorney-General of the Federation, in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Youth Development, to amend the NYSC Act and related regulations to provide legal backing for the new measures.
