The Ogun State Government has unveiled an ambitious strategy aimed at achieving 24-hour electricity supply across the state through independent power generation projects and a comprehensive electricity consumption audit.

Governor Dapo Abiodun announced that the initiative is part of the state’s broader industrial transformation agenda, designed to reduce production costs, eliminate power shortages, and ensure equitable electricity distribution to all communities.

Central to the plan is the Ogun State Light-Up Project, which includes a 30-megawatt power plant located at Onijanganjangan near Ewekoro in Abeokuta. Officials confirmed that installation works are nearing completion, with testing expected to begin soon as part of the project’s first phase.

The governor explained that the plant represents the initial stage of a planned 100-megawatt capacity project intended to supply uninterrupted electricity to major parts of Abeokuta metropolis.

In addition, a 4-megawatt gas-fired independent power plant at Oke-Mosan is also nearing completion and will primarily serve government institutions, health facilities, and other critical public infrastructure before expanding supply to residential and industrial users.

The project is designed as a dual-fuel system, capable of operating on gas and diesel to ensure reliability, with full commissioning expected within weeks.

Alongside power generation, the state is conducting a statewide electricity consumption audit to monitor usage patterns, reduce energy theft, and improve distribution efficiency.

The audit is expected to support better load management, accurate tariff planning, and targeted infrastructure expansion to underserved communities.

Officials say the initiative is made possible under Nigeria’s Electricity Act 2023, which allows states to generate, transmit, and distribute electricity independently of the national grid, enabling localized energy systems tailored to industrial and residential needs.

The state has also established the Ogun State Electricity Regulatory Commission to oversee licensing, tariffs, and service standards within the state power sector.

Additional power projects are planned for Sagamu, Ota, and Ijebu-Ode as part of future phases of the Light-Up initiative.

Governor Abiodun said the reforms are aimed at positioning Ogun as a leading industrial hub with stable, affordable, and reliable electricity supply that can attract investment and support manufacturing growth.
