ONE BILLIONAIRE’S WEALTH NEARLY EQUALS THAT OF 65 MILLION SOUTH AFRICANS COMBINED

South African-born billionaire Elon Musk is reportedly edging closer to becoming the world’s first trillionaire, with projections suggesting his wealth could soon rival the combined net worth of all 65 million South Africans.

According to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, Musk’s net worth has already surged to about $722 billion in recent years, driven largely by his stakes in major companies such as Tesla, SpaceX, X (formerly Twitter), xAI, and Neuralink.

What sets Musk apart is how tightly his fortune is tied to the performance of these companies, especially SpaceX, which is now preparing for a landmark public listing.

On Wednesday, May 20, 2026, SpaceX filed its S-1 registration statement and investor prospectus ahead of what is expected to be one of the largest initial public offerings (IPOs) in history. The company is reportedly targeting a Nasdaq valuation of around $1.75 trillion.

If successful, the IPO could significantly reshape global wealth rankings.

Musk currently owns an estimated 42% stake in SpaceX and holds about 85% of its voting power. At the projected valuation, that stake alone could be worth roughly $735 billion — pushing his total wealth well beyond the trillion-dollar mark when combined with his other assets.

Analysts estimate that after the IPO, Musk’s net worth could rise to between $1 trillion and $1.1 trillion, depending on market performance and valuation stability.

The scale of that wealth has sparked global comparisons, including one striking benchmark: South Africa itself.

Data from the South African Reserve Bank (SARB) shows that South African households collectively held net wealth of about R22.454 trillion at the end of 2025 — roughly equivalent to $1.36 trillion.

That figure includes financial assets such as pensions, shares, and bank deposits, as well as non-financial assets like property and land, minus total household debt.

Despite the strong performance of South Africa’s financial markets in 2025 — with the JSE All-Share Index rising 37.7% in rand terms and 55.3% in dollar terms — Musk’s projected post-IPO wealth could still match or slightly exceed the combined wealth of all South African households.

The comparison highlights just how extreme global wealth concentration has become, with one individual potentially holding as much wealth as an entire nation of tens of millions of people.
