PROTESTS IN UKRAINE’S CITIES AGAINST ZELENSKY’S REMOVAL OF DEFENCE MINISTER

Protests have erupted across several Ukrainian cities following President Volodymyr Zelensky’s unexpected dismissal of Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov, a move that has sparked criticism from members of the military, political observers and sections of the public.

Demonstrators gathered in Kyiv carrying placards in support of Fedorov and chanting slogans condemning his removal. Similar protests were also reported in other parts of the country as concerns grew over the decision.

Although President Zelensky has yet to publicly explain the dismissal, the move has generated widespread debate. Fedorov, who was appointed defence minister in January, was widely credited with introducing reforms aimed at tackling corruption, improving military efficiency and strengthening the use of technology in Ukraine’s defence strategy.

Lawmakers were expected to vote on the nomination of Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko as Fedorov’s replacement, while broader changes in government also saw Serhiy Koretsky appointed as Ukraine’s new prime minister.

Fedorov later suggested that disagreements with Ukraine’s military leadership may have contributed to his removal. He revealed that he had proposed changes within the armed forces, including replacing senior military commanders, but those recommendations were rejected.

Despite declining an offer to remain as a presidential adviser, Fedorov said he still believed President Zelensky would act in the country’s best interest and expressed hope that the situation would eventually be resolved.

His dismissal has drawn strong reactions from soldiers, military officials and supporters, many of whom praised his leadership and contributions to Ukraine’s defence efforts. Several military figures argued that his reforms had modernised the armed forces through the expanded use of drones, digital technology and innovative military strategies.

Fedorov also highlighted his achievements after leaving office, pledging to continue supporting Ukraine’s defence through technological innovation and strategic development.

The decision has further fueled public debate over the direction of Ukraine’s military leadership as the country continues to defend itself against Russia’s ongoing invasion.
