A senior judge has emphasized the importance of fostering “sisterhood” within the legal profession, saying that women must support one another to succeed in a system that has historically been shaped by male dominance.
Justice BV Nagarathna made the remarks while speaking at the launch of Senior Advocate Indira Jaising’s memoir titled “Constitution Is My Home.”

She noted that the legal profession, while highly competitive, has long been influenced by informal networks that tend to favour men, making it easier for them to progress through established professional relationships and support systems.
According to her, women entering the profession have often done so without similar networks, making solidarity and mutual support essential for long-term progress and inclusion.

She stressed that “sisterhood” in the legal field should not be seen as a symbolic idea but as a deliberate professional commitment aimed at ensuring that individual achievements translate into broader institutional change.

Justice Nagarathna also reflected on the historical struggles of women in law, noting that earlier generations had to fight simply to gain entry into courtrooms, while later generations worked to earn recognition and leadership roles within the profession.
She observed that each generation of women lawyers has built on the sacrifices of those before them, gradually reducing barriers and expanding opportunities for others.
She further highlighted that women in law have contributed significantly to shaping democratic institutions by bringing attention to issues affecting marginalized communities and strengthening constitutional justice.

Speaking on the legacy of Indira Jaising, she praised her contributions to advancing access to justice and expanding the space for women in the legal profession, including advocacy for workplace reforms such as childcare support within court environments.
Justice Nagarathna added that women are not newcomers to the legal system but equal contributors to its development and institutional growth.
Chief Justice of India Surya Kant also sent a message at the event, congratulating Jaising and underscoring the importance of constitutional values.
