SUCCESSION SIGNALS IN LAGOS: TINUBU BACKS NEW POLITICAL DIRECTION AHEAD OF TRANSITION TALKS

Mudashiru Obasa, who was earlier believed to be eyeing the Lagos governorship seat, has reportedly shifted his political strategy following recent developments within the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state.

Obasa had intensified consultations across Lagos State and reactivated the Mandate Group, a long-standing political structure associated with President Bola Tinubu, as part of his broader ambition.

However, party dynamics appear to have changed course after reports emerged that the APC leadership, in consultation with the Governance Advisory Council (GAC), has settled on Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat as the preferred candidate for the 2027 governorship race.

According to party insiders, this development prompted Obasa to reconsider his options and redirect his focus toward the Lagos West Senatorial District, where he was initially expected to contest.

His new move, however, is said to have met resistance within sections of the party, particularly from stakeholders who are backing the re-election bid of the current senator and former deputy governor, Idiat Adebule.

Some APC leaders reportedly argue that Adebule’s position remains significant, especially as she is currently the only female senator from the South-West, a factor they say strengthens calls for continuity and gender representation at the national level.

A party source explained that internal consultations within the APC have been ongoing, with competing interests shaping the zoning and ticket considerations ahead of 2027.

President Bola Tinubu is also said to have intervened in the discussions, reportedly advising Obasa to consider a return to the House of Representatives instead of pursuing the senatorial ambition.

Another source within the party said Obasa has since adjusted his political calculations and may now be looking in that direction.

“He has been encouraged to consider the Agege Federal Constituency. From all indications, he has started reaching out quietly to his political base there,” the source said.

While none of the stakeholders have made official public declarations, political activity within Lagos APC continues to build momentum as alignments and realignments ahead of 2027 gradually take shape.
