TEARS AS CHOLERA OUTBREAK KILLS 40, INFECTS 3,000 IN BORNO

A cholera outbreak in Borno State has claimed at least 40 lives and affected more than 3,000 people across 139 communities in seven local government areas, according to government data and local reports.

The outbreak, recorded between May 1 and May 28, 2026, spread across Maiduguri, Jere, Mafa, Konduga, Monguno, Ngala, and Magumeri LGAs. Authorities had earlier reported 27 deaths and 2,715 infections, but updated figures later showed a rise to 37 fatalities and over 3,000 cases within a few days, indicating a worsening situation.

Families of affected patients, however, believe the actual toll may be higher, alleging that some victims are dying at home without being recorded.

Health officials say Maiduguri metropolis has been the worst hit, accounting for more than half of all reported cases. Treatment centres in Maiduguri and Jere are reportedly overwhelmed, with patients receiving care on bare floors due to a shortage of beds and facilities.

At the Brig-Gen Abba Kyari General Hospital in Ngaranam, staff described a severe strain on resources as new cases continue to arrive daily. Temporary treatment tents set up for isolation are also filled beyond capacity, with women and children making up a large portion of patients.

Health workers say the situation reflects one of the most severe cholera outbreaks in the state in recent times, with nearly eight local government areas affected and treatment centres under intense pressure.
