UNIVERSITY GIVES SACKED LECTURERS 30 DAYS TO CHALLENGE DISMISSAL

The management of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU), Igbariam, has granted dismissed staff members a one-month window to challenge the disciplinary action taken against them.

Vice-Chancellor Kate Omenugha announced the decision while speaking with journalists at the university, stating that affected employees are free to submit appeals for reconsideration within the stipulated period.

The university recently terminated the appointments of two professors, Chike Osegbue and C. C. Nwabachili, alongside Ifeoma Kakulu, I. H. Iheukwumere and Emeka Nwabunnia of the Department of Microbiology over allegations including sexual exploitation of students and other ethical violations.

Omenugha explained that each case underwent the institution’s disciplinary procedures before the university council approved the dismissals, stressing that the decisions were reached after due process.

Addressing the dismissal of Professor Osegbue, the vice-chancellor denied claims that the action was linked to his involvement in the university’s vice-chancellor selection process. She maintained that his dismissal resulted from his alleged failure to teach an assigned postgraduate course and his refusal to appear before an investigative panel.

She also dismissed concerns over the legal action instituted by Osegbue, saying she remains committed to carrying out her responsibilities despite criticism surrounding the decision.

Omenugha rejected claims of an organised media campaign against her, insisting that attempts to discredit her before and after assuming office would not distract her from implementing reforms at the institution.

According to her, the administration is focused on improving the university’s reputation through initiatives aimed at enhancing its visibility, sustainability and overall development.

Highlighting her qualifications, Omenugha noted that she was Nigeria’s second female professor of Mass Communication and has served in several leadership positions, including Commissioner for Education, Head of the Department of Mass Communication at Nnamdi Azikiwe University and an international consultant.

She further revealed plans to transform the university environment by developing a leisure park and an economic tree orchard, while pursuing a long-term goal of planting one million trees over the next five years to promote environmental sustainability.

The vice-chancellor also raised concerns over security challenges around the university community and appealed for increased investment in student hostel accommodation to encourage more students to reside on campus.

She commended Anambra State Governor Charles Soludo for supporting infrastructure development at the university’s Uli campus.
