2027 REALITY CHECK: OBI’S EX-RUNNING MATE SAYS NORTHERN SUPPORT IS UNLIKELY

Former vice-presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, has expressed doubts about Peter Obi’s ability to secure strong backing from Northern Nigeria ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking during an interview on Symfoni TV, Datti said it is unlikely that the North would unite behind Obi, though he emphasised that his remarks reflect his personal opinion. He also noted that he maintains mutual respect and cordial relationships with key political figures across the country.

Datti revealed that he had earlier advised Obi to begin building strategic alliances well in advance of the next election cycle. According to him, as far back as January 2024, he suggested that Obi should engage influential northern politicians such as Rabiu Kwankwaso and Nasir El-Rufai as part of long-term planning for 2027.

He stressed that early preparation is critical in politics, warning that failure to lay groundwork years ahead raises concerns about a candidate’s readiness. Datti added that his continued political alignment would depend on the presence of a clear and structured long-term strategy.

Commenting on Obi’s recent political moves, he pointed to his growing association with Kwankwaso but questioned the viability of such an alliance, saying its success remains uncertain and can only be determined with time.

Datti also criticised Obi’s handling of internal issues within the Labour Party, arguing that a candidate who emerged through the party should have remained to address its challenges rather than stepping away.

Despite his concerns, Datti reiterated that his stance does not diminish his respect for Obi or other political actors, but reflects his perspective on the realities shaping the path to 2027.
