KADUNA — The Arewa Youth Assembly (AYA) has called for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to be allowed to complete two terms in office, insisting that the South should retain the presidency until 2031 under Nigeria’s informal zoning arrangement.
In a statement issued on Sunday by its Speaker, Mohammed Salihu Danlami, the group said there is “no vacancy in Aso Rock until May 29, 2031,” warning Northern politicians against contesting the 2027 presidential election.
According to the group, respecting zoning is necessary for fairness and national stability, noting that the North previously benefitted from the arrangement during the tenure of former President Muhammadu Buhari.

“This is not a matter for debate. In the interest of national cohesion and continuity, Northern political actors should not contest the presidency in 2027,” the statement read.
The AYA further warned that any attempt by Northern aspirants to enter the race could be resisted by youths across the region, describing such moves as a violation of the country’s unwritten political understanding.
The group also expressed support for the Tinubu administration, saying key economic reforms—such as fuel subsidy removal, exchange rate adjustments, and efforts to stabilise public finances—were beginning to show results.

It noted improvements in Nigeria’s fiscal position, including better revenue performance and a reduction in debt servicing pressure.
On security, the youths commended ongoing military operations and intelligence coordination, saying there had been noticeable progress in tackling banditry and rescuing kidnapped victims in parts of Northern Nigeria. They also praised National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu for coordinating security reforms.
While acknowledging that challenges remain, the group urged government officials to do more in communicating policies and achievements to citizens at the grassroots level.

“It is not enough to work silently. Government must engage the people and explain the gains being recorded so Nigerians can better understand ongoing reforms,” the statement added.
The AYA described the 2027 election as a referendum on continuity, declaring full support for Tinubu’s re-election bid and urging unity across regional and political lines.
“We stand firmly with the President and assure him of the support of Northern youths. Continuity is key, and it must be sustained,” the group said.
