TWO MASTER’S DEGREE HOLDER, EX-INTELLIGENCE CHIEF: MEET NIGERIA’S NEW IGP TUNJI DISU

The Presidency has confirmed that Kayode Egbetokun has resigned from his position as Inspector-General of Police.

According to official information, Egbetokun stepped down due to personal family matters that require his full attention. A statement from the Presidency explained that his decision was formally communicated in a resignation letter submitted on Monday.

However, sources within the Presidential Villa disclosed that the former police chief was asked to relinquish his position during a meeting with President Bola Tinubu held on Monday evening in Abuja. Officials familiar with the meeting described it as a direct summons rather than a routine engagement.

Egbetokun was seen arriving at the Presidential Villa that evening, coinciding with the arrival of governors for an interfaith breaking of fast with the President. His appearance initially sparked speculation about the purpose of his visit before it was later confirmed that he had been specifically invited by the President.

Following his resignation, attention has shifted to Assistant Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu, who is widely tipped as the likely successor. Although no official announcement has been made, senior security sources indicated that Disu could soon be confirmed as the next Inspector-General of Police.

Disu, born on April 13, 1966, has previously served as Commissioner of Police in both Rivers State and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. He also once headed the Intelligence Response Team of the Nigeria Police Force, a unit responsible for high-profile criminal investigations.

Currently, Disu serves as the Assistant Inspector-General of Police overseeing the Force Criminal Investigation Department Annex in Alagbon, Lagos. He is a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police and holds academic qualifications in English Education, Public Administration, and Criminology, Security and Legal Psychology.

As the Presidency prepares for an official announcement, expectations continue to build around Disu’s possible emergence as the new head of the Nigeria Police Force.
