NNPP National Publicity Secretary, Ladipo Johnson, stated that despite the departure of its 2023 presidential candidate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, the party will continue to field candidates in upcoming elections while collaborating with the ADC at the presidential and some national levels.

Johnson explained that discussions among opposition leaders led to a consensus to unite under one platform for the 2027 polls. Kwankwaso, a former two-term governor of Kano State, is set to officially join the ADC in Kano State, following weeks of consultations with the Kwankwasiyya movement and top opposition figures.

The former Kano governor has also engaged with key political leaders, including the ADC National Secretary, Rauf Aregbesola, Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, and Senator Seriake Dickson, as part of efforts to forge a broader coalition capable of challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The move comes amid tensions between Kwankwaso and his former protégé, Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf, who recently defected from the NNPP to the APC along with lawmakers and appointees. Kwankwaso criticized Yusuf’s defection as a betrayal, highlighting divisions within the movement he established.
