Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, has advised Nigerians against supporting former Vice President Atiku Abubakar in the 2027 presidential election, accusing him of promoting ethnic-based politics.
Lawal made the statement during a telephone interview while reacting to the controversy surrounding the African Democratic Congress (ADC) governorship ticket in Adamawa State.
He alleged that Atiku was involved in efforts to replace the party’s governorship candidate, Suleiman Omar, with Tukur Modibbo, claiming that the move was politically motivated.
According to Lawal, the former vice president’s political activities have consistently been influenced by ethnic considerations, and he urged Nigerians to carefully consider such factors ahead of the next presidential election.
Atiku, however, rejected the allegations, describing them as false and without foundation.
In a statement released by his media aide, Phrank Shaibu, the former vice president denied having any role in an alleged attempt to alter the ADC governorship ticket in Adamawa State.
The statement said Atiku had not held any meeting, given any instruction or taken part in any discussion concerning the replacement of the party’s duly elected governorship candidate.
It further accused those spreading the allegations of attempting to create division within the ADC due to concerns over the party’s growing unity and political strength.
Atiku’s camp urged party members, supporters and the public to disregard what it described as unfounded claims, maintaining that the ADC remains committed to internal democracy, due process and respect for decisions made by the party’s recognised organs.
The dispute comes amid increasing political activities and realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.
