For almost 60 days, the fate of the 46 students and teachers abducted from schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State remained one of Nigeria’s most painful national conversations. Parents lived through unimaginable anxiety. Communities prayed without ceasing. Across the country, many Nigerians feared that yet another school abduction would end in prolonged captivity or tragedy.
Instead, the crisis concluded with a successful rescue operation.
Security forces recovered the victims alive after an intelligence-driven operation that reportedly led to the arrest of eight suspected terrorists while several others were killed during the operation. The outcome immediately generated widespread relief across Oyo State and beyond, with scenes of celebration in Ogbomoso and neighbouring communities as families reunited with their loved ones.
The operation represents more than the rescue of innocent citizens. It has become one of the most significant security successes recorded in recent months and has inevitably raised an important political question:
Will this operation improve President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s popularity and public acceptability?
Research in political science suggests that the answer is likely yes, although the magnitude and durability of that effect will depend on what follows.
Security Is the First Test of Government
Across democratic societies, citizens judge governments on many issues—employment, inflation, education, healthcare, infrastructure and economic opportunities. Yet one responsibility consistently ranks above all others: the protection of life and property.
When governments successfully rescue kidnapped citizens, dismantle criminal networks or defeat terrorist groups, public confidence often improves because people see evidence that the state remains capable of exercising its primary responsibility.
Political scientists have long described this phenomenon as the “rally-around-the-leader” effect. During national emergencies, decisive and successful government action frequently generates increased public confidence in political leadership, especially when citizens believe competent decisions produced measurable results.
The Oyo rescue fits many of the characteristics associated with such public reactions.
Unlike statistics on economic growth or fiscal reforms, the rescue of schoolchildren and teachers speaks directly to the emotions of ordinary Nigerians. Parents across the country can easily imagine the anguish experienced by the affected families. Consequently, a successful rescue carries psychological significance that extends far beyond the immediate victims.
A Victory Beyond the Battlefield
The successful operation also represents an important strategic achievement.
Reports indicate that security agencies not only secured the release of the hostages but also arrested eight suspected terrorists while neutralising others during the operation.
Counter-terrorism specialists generally regard this as particularly significant.
Hostage recovery saves lives. Arresting members of terrorist networks creates opportunities for intelligence exploitation, exposing collaborators, financiers, logistics suppliers, safe houses and operational methods. Every captured suspect potentially provides information capable of preventing future attacks.
From a security perspective, dismantling criminal infrastructure is often more valuable than resolving a single incident because it weakens the operational capability of violent groups.
If effectively exploited, intelligence gathered from the suspects could assist ongoing operations against kidnapping and terrorist networks operating across the South-West and adjoining states.
The Political Significance for Tinubu
Since assuming office in May 2023, President Tinubu’s administration has pursued far-reaching economic reforms while simultaneously confronting multiple security challenges inherited over many years.
Public debate has often focused on inflation, fuel subsidy removal, exchange-rate reforms and the rising cost of living.
These issues have understandably dominated political discourse.
However, security remains equally important.
Many Nigerians have consistently argued that economic reforms cannot fully succeed unless citizens feel safe to farm, invest, travel, attend school and conduct business without fear.
Against that background, the successful rescue in Oyo provides the administration with evidence that sustained investment in intelligence gathering, specialised operations and inter-agency cooperation can produce concrete results.
It also reinforces repeated assurances by President Tinubu that security agencies would receive greater operational support, improved logistics and enhanced intelligence capabilities.
Whether one supports or opposes the administration politically, successful rescue operations represent tangible governance outcomes that citizens readily understand.
Why Images Matter
Modern politics is influenced not only by policy but also by public perception.
The images emerging from the rescue operation were powerful.
Armoured fighting vehicles.
Special Forces personnel in full tactical gear.
Military mobility.
Coordinated operational planning.
For many Nigerians, these images projected preparedness, professionalism and state capacity.
Communication experts have long observed that visible demonstrations of competence often shape public confidence more effectively than official statements alone.
Citizens tend to judge governments less by promises than by observable outcomes.
In this case, the outcome was unmistakable: forty-six kidnapped Nigerians returned home alive.
Lessons from Other Democracies
History provides numerous examples of successful security operations strengthening public confidence in national leadership.
The United States experienced significant public approval increases following successful counter-terrorism operations.
Israel has repeatedly demonstrated how effective hostage rescue missions reinforce national morale and public confidence in state institutions.
Colombia’s sustained campaign against kidnapping networks significantly improved domestic confidence after years of insecurity, particularly when high-profile hostages were rescued through intelligence-led operations.
The United Kingdom likewise witnessed positive public responses following successful counter-terrorism interventions that protected civilian lives.
Although every country has different political realities, one lesson remains consistent:
Security successes generally improve public confidence—but only when they become consistent rather than exceptional.
Why One Success Is Not Enough
It would be inaccurate to conclude that this single operation automatically transforms national public opinion.
Nigeria’s security challenges remain extensive.
Terrorism persists in parts of the North-East.
Banditry continues to affect communities in the North-West.
Kidnapping remains a concern in several regions.
Violent criminal networks continue to exploit forests and poorly governed spaces.
Consequently, citizens are unlikely to judge government performance solely on one successful operation.
Instead, they will ask whether the Oyo rescue represents the beginning of a broader security turnaround.
That distinction is critical.
Political research consistently shows that sustained performance influences long-term approval ratings far more than isolated achievements.
From Tactical Success to Strategic Success
The real opportunity before the Tinubu administration lies in transforming this operational victory into a sustained national security strategy.
This requires continued investment in intelligence-led policing and military operations.
Greater deployment of surveillance technology, including drones and electronic monitoring systems.
Improved coordination among the Armed Forces, Police, Department of State Services, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and state-backed security initiatives.
Better protection for schools, particularly in rural communities.
Enhanced border security to disrupt the movement of arms and criminal elements.
Rapid-response capabilities capable of preventing abductions before they occur.
These measures would convert individual operational successes into broader national security gains.
The Importance of Public Confidence
Public confidence is itself a strategic national asset.

When citizens trust security institutions, they are more willing to volunteer intelligence, cooperate with investigations and support lawful operations.
Communities become partners rather than spectators.
This relationship is particularly important in combating terrorism and organised crime, where actionable local intelligence often determines operational success.
The rescue of the Oriire students and teachers therefore has significance beyond politics.
It reinforces confidence that determined security operations can deliver results.
Looking Towards 2027
As political attention gradually shifts towards the 2027 general elections, security performance will almost certainly remain one of the issues shaping public opinion.
Economic reforms, infrastructure development, employment and social welfare will all influence voters.
Yet Nigerians are equally likely to ask a simple question:

“Are we safer than we were before?”
The answer to that question may ultimately prove more influential than campaign slogans or political rhetoric.
If successful operations like the Oyo rescue become increasingly common, they could substantially strengthen public confidence in the administration’s capacity to protect lives and secure communities.
If they remain isolated victories, however, their political impact may diminish over time.
History Rewards Consistency
The successful rescue of the 46 abducted students and teachers represents a commendable achievement for Nigeria’s security agencies and a moment of profound relief for their families.
It also provides President Bola Ahmed Tinubu with an important governance success at a time when citizens continue to demand measurable improvements in national security.
History, however, rarely rewards governments for isolated triumphs.
It rewards consistency.
The true measure of this operation will not be found solely in the celebrations that followed the victims’ return. It will be determined by whether it marks the beginning of a sustained campaign that restores confidence in Nigeria’s security architecture, protects schools from future attacks, dismantles terrorist networks and reassures every Nigerian parent that children can pursue education without fear.
If that becomes the enduring legacy of the Oyo rescue operation, its significance will extend far beyond one successful mission. It will stand as evidence that determined leadership, capable institutions and intelligence-driven security operations can reverse the tide against terrorism and restore public confidence in the Nigerian state.
The National Patriots commends President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his steadfast commitment to restoring security and applauds the gallantry of the Armed Forces, intelligence agencies and all security personnel whose professionalism secured the release of the Oriire victims. We urge sustained intelligence-led operations to dismantle terrorist networks completely and ensure every Nigerian child can learn in safety and peace.
