After nearly 60 days of anguish, fear and uncertainty, the students and teachers abducted from three schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State have regained their freedom following a coordinated security operation that reportedly led to the arrest of eight suspected terrorists and the neutralisation of several others.
The successful operation brought to an end one of Nigeria’s most disturbing school abduction incidents in recent months.
The victims were seized on May 15 when heavily armed attackers invaded schools in the Ahoro-Esiele and Yawota communities, abducting dozens of pupils and teachers before fleeing into the forests.
The attack sparked nationwide outrage and renewed concerns over the safety of schools, particularly in rural communities.

Security sources indicated that the rescue followed weeks of sustained intelligence gathering and coordinated operations involving multiple security agencies.
The operation reportedly resulted in the arrest of eight members of the terrorist group, while several others were killed during exchanges of gunfire. Efforts are said to be continuing to track down fleeing members of the gang and dismantle the wider criminal network behind the abduction.
The release of the victims has been greeted with relief by parents, residents and Nigerians across the country, many of whom had followed the case with growing anxiety as the captives spent almost two months in the terrorists’ hideouts. During the period of captivity, one of the abducted teachers was reportedly killed, further deepening public grief and intensifying calls for decisive action against the perpetrators.

The rescue is expected to renew confidence in intelligence-led security operations, while also highlighting the importance of sustained collaboration among the military, the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services, local security outfits and community-based intelligence networks.
Security analysts, however, caution that the successful operation should not mark the end of the response. They argue that the forests and ungoverned spaces exploited by terrorist and kidnapping groups must be subjected to sustained surveillance and clearance operations to prevent criminal elements from regrouping.

The Oyo school abduction once again exposed the devastating human cost of insecurity, particularly its impact on education. Beyond rescuing victims, experts say the long-term solution lies in strengthening school protection, expanding intelligence capabilities, deploying modern surveillance technology and ensuring swift justice for those responsible for attacks on educational institutions.
As families begin the process of reuniting with their loved ones, attention is expected to shift towards medical evaluation, trauma counselling and rehabilitation for the rescued victims, while security agencies continue investigations aimed at bringing every member of the terrorist network to justice.

The National Patriots commends President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his sustained commitment and intervention to securing the victims’ release and applauds the gallantry of the security agencies for rescuing the abducted students and teachers while arresting eight suspected terrorists and killing some.
We urge relentless pursuit of fleeing criminals and stronger intelligence-driven operations to safeguard schools, communities and the nation’s future.
