COURT STRIKES OUT SUIT AS FORMER KANO DEPUTY GOV GWARZO WITHDRAWS IMPEACHMENT CHALLENGE

The Federal High Court in Kano has struck out a case filed by the immediate past Deputy Governor of Kano State, Aminu Abdulsalam Gwarzo, challenging impeachment proceedings initiated against him by the Kano State House of Assembly.

Justice S.M. Shuaibu removed the suit from the court’s docket on Thursday after Gwarzo’s legal team informed the court that he had decided to withdraw the case, bringing an abrupt end to his attempt to stop the impeachment process.

His counsel, Umar Danbaito, confirmed the withdrawal during proceedings, effectively discontinuing the legal challenge that sought to restrain the Assembly from moving forward with his removal.

Gwarzo had originally approached the court on March 25, requesting an order to halt the impeachment process, which began earlier on March 5. However, the court declined to grant an interim injunction and instead ordered the Kano State House of Assembly to respond to the suit.

The matter was later adjourned to April 16 before it was ultimately discontinued by the claimant.

The impeachment effort against Gwarzo is believed to be tied to internal political disagreements within the state, including reports of his refusal to defect from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) alongside Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.

The Kano State House of Assembly had earlier stated that the impeachment notice was backed by 38 lawmakers and followed constitutional procedures under Section 188 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

He is also facing allegations involving financial misconduct related to local government councils between June 2023 and January 2024.
