FAKE FOOD CRACKDOWN: ABUJA SUPERMARKET SEALED OVER POISONOUS RICE, EXPIRED GOODS

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has sealed a supermarket in the Guzape area of Abuja following allegations of unfair pricing practices and the sale of counterfeit and expired products.

The enforcement operation, carried out on Friday, came after multiple consumer complaints accusing the store of deceptive trading activities.

During the inspection, FCCPC officials reportedly uncovered discrepancies between shelf prices and what customers were charged at the point of payment. They also found products without price tags, expired goods on display, poor storage of perishable items, and suspected counterfeit rice.

In a statement shared on its official X account, the Commission said several items were confiscated during the raid as part of ongoing investigations.

According to the FCCPC, “During the inspection, the Commission identified several potential consumer protection violations, including differences between shelf prices and checkout prices, products displayed without price tags, expired products offered for sale, improper storage of perishable items, and suspected counterfeit products, including rice.”

The agency confirmed that the supermarket will remain closed until investigations are completed and the source of the suspected fake products is established.

It added that businesses must ensure transparency in pricing and maintain acceptable standards in product safety and consumer treatment, warning that regulatory action will follow a full review of findings.

The Commission also urged Nigerians to continue reporting suspicious market practices, stressing that consumer protection remains a shared responsibility.
