LAGOS GOVT BREAKS SILENCE: SANWO-OLU ‘HEALTHY AND WORKING’, RESIGNATION RUMOURS DISMISSED

The Lagos State Government has dismissed reports claiming Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has been asked to resign over alleged health concerns to pave the way for Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat to take over.

The report had alleged that President Bola Tinubu and some political stakeholders were dissatisfied with the current leadership in Lagos and were pushing for a leadership change.

Reacting in a statement on Monday, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Publicity, Gboyega Akosile, described the claim as completely false and misleading.

Akosile said there was no truth to the report and insisted that Governor Sanwo-Olu remains in good health and fully engaged in his duties as the elected leader of the state.

“We have noted with concern a false report alleging that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has been ordered to resign on health grounds. This report is false in its entirety. Nobody has asked the Governor to resign,” the statement read.

He added that the governor is “in fine fettle, of sound mind, and actively discharging his responsibilities to the people of Lagos State.”

The government also accused the report of being part of a pattern of misinformation aimed at causing unnecessary political tension, urging the public to disregard it completely.

Sanwo-Olu, who assumed office in 2019, is currently serving his second term, which is expected to end in May 2027.

Interestingly, the clarification comes shortly after the governor publicly endorsed his deputy, Obafemi Hamzat, as a capable successor, describing him as “the best man for the job” during a meeting with party leaders at the Lagos State Government House in Alausa, Ikeja.

While the government has firmly denied any resignation plans, the political conversations around succession in Lagos continue to attract public attention as the 2027 elections draw closer.
