The National Pension Commission (PenCom) and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Lagos State Council, have announced plans to begin strict enforcement actions against employers who fail to remit workers’ pension contributions under the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS), starting June 1.

The announcement was made following an interactive session organised by PenCom in Lagos on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, which focused on strengthening compliance with the Pension Reform Act and improving awareness among labour leaders.
Chairperson of the NLC Lagos State Council, Funmi Sesi, condemned the persistent failure of some employers to remit deducted pension funds, describing the practice as a violation of workers’ rights and labour laws.

She stated that many workers continue to suffer from delayed or missing pension remittances despite regular deductions from their monthly salaries, warning that the union would intensify monitoring and enforcement efforts in collaboration with relevant agencies.
Sesi also noted that the NLC had received increasing complaints from affected workers across both public and private sectors in Lagos, adding that the union would mobilise its affiliates to ensure compliance among defaulting employers.
She warned that organisations failing to meet their pension obligations could face public exposure and possible legal action, stressing that pensions represent a fundamental right that guarantees dignity after retirement.

On its part, the Director-General of PenCom, Omolola Oloworaran, reaffirmed that the Contributory Pension Scheme was designed to ensure financial security for workers after retirement.
Represented at the event, she said the scheme has improved pension administration in Nigeria but expressed concern over continued non-remittance by some employers.

She warned that withholding workers’ pension deductions is a criminal offence under the law and urged affected employees to report defaulting organisations for investigation and enforcement.
PenCom further announced that it would begin joint monitoring operations with the NLC across Lagos State from June, targeting organisations found to be violating pension regulations.
Authorities stressed that the enforcement drive is aimed at protecting workers’ rights, strengthening compliance, and ensuring that retirement benefits are paid as and when due.
