Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump held a phone conversation lasting nearly 90 minutes, during which discussions reportedly focused on efforts to end the ongoing war in Ukraine.

According to Russian officials, the call took place shortly before a key NATO summit and marked the fourth conversation between both leaders this year. Trump reportedly reiterated his willingness to help facilitate an early end to the conflict, while Putin described the discussion as constructive and businesslike.

The Russian side stated that Putin also congratulated Trump and the American people on the United States’ Independence Day anniversary, while emphasizing Moscow’s preference for a political and diplomatic resolution to the war. Russia also maintained its position that its military forces are advancing in parts of eastern Ukraine, particularly in the Donetsk region.
At the same time, Ukraine has continued its own military operations, including drone and missile strikes targeting Russian energy infrastructure such as oil refineries and fuel depots.

Volodymyr Zelensky also confirmed he had a positive call with Trump, stating that there remains a real opportunity to end the war with strong international support.
Tensions remain high on the battlefield, with Russia claiming gains in parts of Donetsk, while Ukrainian forces dispute those claims and say they continue to hold defensive positions and conduct counter-operations. Independent military analysts have noted that battlefield reports from both sides are often contradictory amid ongoing fighting.

The war continues to shape global diplomacy, especially as NATO members prepare for a summit where defense commitments and support for Ukraine are expected to be key topics of discussion. Ukraine has also increased attacks on Russian infrastructure in recent weeks, reportedly causing significant damage to energy facilities used to support Moscow’s war efforts
