SPAIN TO URGE EU TO SUSPEND ASSOCIATION AGREEMENT WITH ISRAEL

Spain is officially turning up the heat on Israel. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez just announced that his government is formally asking the European Union to scrap its long-standing association agreement with the country, arguing that Israel’s actions have crossed the line of international law.

While speaking at a rally in Andalusia, Sánchez didn’t mince words. He told the crowd that because of these alleged violations, Israel simply can’t be considered a partner of the EU anymore. “It’s as simple as that,” he said.

This isn’t just a sudden spike in tension; it’s the climax of a year where Sánchez has become one of the loudest critics of Israel’s military operations. Things have been heading south for a while:

Diplomatic Break: Back in March, Madrid officially pulled its ambassador out of Israel, effectively cutting off high-level diplomatic ties.

The Iran Conflict: Spain has been particularly vocal about the recent warfare involving Israel, the U.S., and Iran. Sánchez went as far as calling the U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran “unjustifiable.”

Drawing a Line: To make their stance even clearer, Spain recently blocked the U.S. from using joint military bases for any operations against Iran, labeling the escalation unlawful.

Sánchez is positioning Spain as the leader of the “anti-war” camp within Europe, sticking firmly to a “no to war” policy even as other Western allies take a more interventionist path. For the Spanish government, the message is clear: if you don’t play by the international rulebook, the partnership is over.
