TRUMP WRAPS UP CHINA MISSION WITH FRAGILE DIPLOMATIC RESET BUT LIMITED BREAKTHROUGHS

U.S. President Donald Trump departed Beijing on Friday after two days of meetings with Chinese President Xi Jinping aimed at easing tensions between the world’s two largest economies.

Although no major breakthroughs were announced, both leaders projected a more stable tone in relations following discussions that covered trade, Taiwan, Iran, energy, and regional security.

Speaking before leaving China, Trump said he and Xi had addressed several difficult issues and described the relationship between both countries as “very strong.” He later revealed that discussions on Taiwan and U.S. arms sales to the island were held in great detail.

Trump, however, stopped short of confirming whether the United States would defend Taiwan in the event of a military conflict with China. He noted that Xi had raised the same question during their talks.

Taiwan remained one of the most sensitive subjects during the summit, with Xi reportedly warning that the issue remains the most important matter in China-U.S. relations. According to the Chinese government, Xi cautioned that mishandling the Taiwan situation could seriously damage bilateral ties.

The ongoing conflict involving Iran also overshadowed the visit. Observers had expected Washington to seek Beijing’s influence in encouraging Tehran toward diplomatic negotiations, given China’s close ties with Iran and its role as a major buyer of Iranian oil.

While Trump stated that Xi had offered to help resolve the conflict and promised not to provide Iran with military support, there were no clear signs that China would increase pressure on Tehran.

Both countries reportedly agreed that the Strait of Hormuz should remain open for international shipping and that Iran should not possess nuclear weapons.

Trade discussions were another major focus of the meetings, though many of the economic agreements mentioned by the Trump administration were not officially confirmed by Beijing.

Trump announced that China had agreed to purchase 200 Boeing aircraft, while U.S. officials also indicated progress on agricultural and beef export arrangements. China, however, only broadly stated that both countries would continue expanding cooperation in trade, tourism, agriculture, and healthcare.

The summit was also marked by extensive diplomatic gestures from China, including grand welcome ceremonies, military displays, and private tours hosted by Xi for the American president.

Trump repeatedly praised Xi during the visit, describing him as serious, focused, and business-minded. The U.S. president also expressed appreciation for the hospitality shown by the Chinese leadership throughout the trip.

Despite lingering disagreements over Taiwan, trade, sanctions, and global security, the visit appeared to help temporarily calm tensions between both nations at a time of growing international uncertainty.
