Prominent academics and medical experts gathered in Lagos on Tuesday to honour the late pioneer clinical and radiation oncologist in West Africa, Kofi Duncan, celebrating his life, contributions, and lasting impact on medical education and cancer treatment in the region.

The tribute, held at the College of Medicine, University of Lagos (CMUL), brought together the Vice Chancellor of the University of Lagos, Folashade Ogunsola; the Provost of CMUL, Ademola Oremosu; and Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Osato Giwa-Osagie, among others.

Speaking through the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Development Services), Prof. Afolabi Lesi, Ogunsola described Duncan as a true pioneer who helped lay the foundation for cancer treatment in Nigeria and across West Africa.

“He was a pioneer, a trailblazer and an icon. He was one of the pioneers of cancer treatment in Nigeria and West Africa,” she said, adding that he was also a respected mentor to many in the medical field.

Prof. Oremosu recalled Duncan’s early contributions at CMUL, noting that he was among the first set of specialists to introduce radiation therapy for cancer treatment in the institution. He also highlighted his role in bringing advanced medical equipment to Nigeria at the time.

“He trained at Ibadan and was one of the early staff members of CMUL. He spent about 10 years there and was among the first to use radiation therapy in cancer care,” Oremosu said.

Prof. Giwa-Osagie described the late oncologist as a compassionate and lively personality, noting their shared background as alumni of King’s College, Lagos.

Family members also paid emotional tributes. His son, Eyimofe Duncan, described him as a great academic and pioneer whose legacy became even more evident during the ceremony. His daughter, Erejuwa Gbadebo (née Duncan), said he was a loving father who constantly encouraged his children to excel.

Speakers at the event unanimously praised Duncan’s pioneering role in radiation oncology, his dedication to mentorship, and his lasting influence on generations of medical professionals, noting that his contributions will continue to shape medical practice and education in Nigeria for years to come.
