US AMBASSADOR POSTS VACANT IN NIGERIA, 116 COUNTRIES – REPORT

United States ambassadorial postings across the world, including Nigeria, are currently facing widespread vacancies, with official records showing that 117 countries are without Senate-confirmed U.S. ambassadors.

According to data released by the U.S. Department of State on April 8, 2026, and published under its “Ambassadorial Assignments Overseas” report, Nigeria is among several nations affected by the diplomatic gap. The report indicates that many U.S. embassies are being managed by acting officials rather than confirmed ambassadors.

The vacancies span across Africa, Europe, Asia, the Americas, and Oceania, covering countries such as Ghana, Kenya, Germany, Ukraine, Brazil, and Australia, among others. This reflects a broad slowdown in the appointment and confirmation process for top diplomatic representatives.

In Africa alone, dozens of countries are affected, including major regional players like Nigeria, Egypt, Kenya, and South Africa, all currently operating without Senate-approved U.S. ambassadors.

The situation follows earlier diplomatic reshuffles, including recalls of senior envoys in late 2025 as part of a restructuring of U.S. foreign service appointments.

Observers note that such gaps in ambassadorial representation may affect diplomatic engagement and coordination, although embassies continue to function under chargé d’affaires or acting heads.
