2027: PRESSURE MOUNTS ON A.A. ZAURA TO DUMP APC FOR NDC AFTER SHEKARAU ‘IMPOSITION’ SPARKS KANO REVOLT

Fresh political tensions are unfolding within the All Progressives Congress in Kano State following mounting calls for leading Kano Central aspirant A.A. Zaura to defect to the Nigeria Democratic Congress after the controversial emergence of Ibrahim Shekarau as the preferred APC consensus candidate for Kano Central.

The development is widely viewed as a direct fallout from the political arrangement allegedly championed by Abba Kabir Yusuf during a high-level meeting in Abuja on Sunday, where several aspirants reportedly agreed to step down in favour of Shekarau.

However, supporters of Zaura — regarded by many grassroots mobilisers as one of the strongest political forces within Kano Central — have reacted angrily to the development, insisting that the consensus arrangement amounted to political imposition rather than democratic negotiation.

Multiple party stakeholders who spoke to Headlinenews.news described the mood across several APC support structures as “tense” and “volatile,” with growing pressure on Zaura to seek an alternative political platform ahead of the 2027 elections.

According to insiders, many supporters believe Zaura’s extensive grassroots structures, youth mobilisation networks and political investments were unfairly ignored despite months of consultations and campaign activities across Kano Central.

“This is no longer about one aspirant. It is about internal democracy,” one supporter said. “People worked, spent resources and built structures believing there would be direct primaries.

Suddenly, they are told a candidate has already been selected for them.”

Several supporters specifically pointed to APC’s earlier position in states such as Yobe, where party leaders publicly maintained that direct primaries would hold if consensus failed.

Political observers warn that the controversy could deepen internal fractures within the APC in Kano if aggrieved aspirants and their supporters begin exploring alternative political platforms.

Analysts also note that Kano remains one of Nigeria’s most politically strategic states, with electoral outcomes often determined by grassroots loyalty, youth participation and local mobilisation strength rather than elite political endorsements alone.

Supporters of Zaura argue that forcing influential aspirants out of contention risks weakening party cohesion at a time when opposition parties are aggressively positioning ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Although Zaura himself has not publicly confirmed any intention to leave the APC, sources close to his political camp disclosed that pressure from supporters to consider the NDC option has intensified significantly since Sunday’s meeting.

The controversy has further fuelled wider debates within Kano political circles over consensus candidacies, political inclusion and whether party leadership should prioritise negotiated arrangements over open competitive primaries.

For many aggrieved stakeholders, the central question remains whether APC can maintain unity in Kano while sidelining aspirants with visible grassroots influence and established political structures.

APC stands to lose some good material and political capital with imposition, blackmail & coercion being masqueraded as consensus!
