#Power Struggle in Lagos Assembly: Obasa Accuses Meranda of Corruption in Court Battle

Fresh drama unfolded in the Lagos State House of Assembly as reinstated Speaker Mudashiru Obasa filed new fraud allegations against his predecessor, Mojisola Meranda, in his ongoing legal battle to solidify his position.

The Ikeja High Court on Monday adjourned the case to March 17 after Obasa’s legal team, led by Afolabi Fasanu (SAN), submitted fresh affidavits alleging corruption against Meranda.

Background of the Crisis

Obasa was impeached on January 13 over allegations of fraud, abuse of office, and gross misconduct, but later reinstated. He is now challenging his removal in court, with Meranda and other lawmakers listed as respondents.

New Twist in Court

During the hearing, Assembly Counsel Femi Falana (SAN) informed the court about Obasa’s new corruption claims against Meranda. Her lawyer, Tayo Oyetibo (SAN), then requested an adjournment to properly respond to the fresh allegations.

Adding to the drama, Obasa attempted to change the Assembly’s legal representation, introducing Olusola Idowu (SAN) as the new counsel. However, Falana objected, citing a Court of Appeal ruling that requires a trial court to first rule on such a request before hearing other matters.

Judge’s Ruling

Presiding Judge Yetunde Pinheiro ruled that all applications, including those challenging the court’s jurisdiction and seeking injunctions, would be heard together on March 17.

The battle for control of the Lagos Assembly continues, with tensions running high as corruption allegations take center stage in the power struggle.
