Sokoto State Governor Ahmed Aliyu has called for unity in addressing the state’s security challenges, warning against the politicization of banditry. Speaking during a condolence visit to Silame Local Government Area, where recent attacks claimed lives, Aliyu described efforts to exploit insecurity for political gain as reckless and harmful to citizens already suffering from banditry.
Aliyu emphasized that security issues are too critical for careless criticism or political debates, as such actions undermine collective efforts to restore peace and embolden criminals. He urged residents to prioritize unity over division, noting that the state government is working closely with security agencies to achieve lasting peace.
The governor revealed that ongoing operations and support measures are yielding results, with the state providing vehicles, logistics, and intelligence to security forces. He also announced plans for a new bill to impose harsh penalties on those aiding bandits, highlighting reports of some residents acting as informants.
During the visit, Aliyu provided ₦2 million and five bags of rice to each of the 33 families affected by the recent attack in Silame, totaling ₦66 million and 165 bags of rice. He called on citizens to remain vigilant, report suspicious activities, and provide credible intelligence, stressing that defeating insecurity requires collective responsibility beyond political differences.
