Niger Governor Urges Residents to Defend Themselves, Rejects Negotiations with Bandits

Niger State Governor, Mohammed Umaru Bago, has declared that the state will neither negotiate with bandits nor pay ransoms for kidnapped victims, as it encourages further abductions and worsens insecurity. Speaking during a condolence visit to communities in Rijau and Magama local government areas recently attacked by bandits in Kontagora, Bago urged residents to stand up and defend themselves.

“The state has reached a point where the people must stand up and defend themselves. I will not negotiate with bandits. I will not pay ransom. The moment we start paying, they will keep kidnapping people,” he said. Bago emphasized that the Constitution grants citizens the right to protect their lives and property, pledging to take necessary steps to uphold this duty.

He expressed dismay at communities being invaded and residents displaced, calling it unacceptable. Meanwhile, in Zamfara State, notorious bandit leader Bello Turji released over 100 captives as part of a peace initiative under the North West Operation Safe Corridor.

The freed victims, including men, women, and children, were handed over to local authorities for medical checks before reuniting with their families. Ongoing dialogues with Turji’s camp aim to secure more releases and end hostilities.

Bandits continue to terrorize Northern Nigeria, forcing many residents to flee or enter peace agreements.
