The Lagos Area Office of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) has launched a clean-up operation to remove water hyacinth clogging waterways around the Ikorodu axis.

According to a statement from NIWA, the initiative aims to prevent disruptions to boat transportation and other waterway activities in nearby communities. The operation, which began around Ebute Ikorodu and Ipakodo ferry terminals, involves the use of swamp devils, harvesters, and other heavy-duty machinery.
Lagos Area Manager, Engr. Sarat Braimah, explained that the deployment is a proactive measure to keep the waterways navigable and protect fishing activities. “We have studied the spread of water hyacinth and decided to act swiftly to reduce its impact before it hampers transportation,” she said.

Braimah added that NIWA’s Managing Director, Mr. Bola Oyebamiji, has approved a nationwide effort to combat the weed. She also noted that she will personally monitor the Ikorodu operation to ensure steady progress.
