‘We will not allow it’: Germany bans Muslim group for calling for creation of caliphate

German authorities have banned a Muslim organisation accused of engaging in anti-constitutional activities and advocating for the establishment of a caliphate.

The Interior Ministry announced the ban on Wednesday, confirming that police raided seven buildings linked to the group Muslim Interaktiv in Hamburg as part of the enforcement operation.

Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt said the government would not tolerate any organisation that seeks to undermine Germany’s democratic values or incite division.

> “We will not allow organisations like Muslim Interaktiv to attack our country from within or spread hatred against our free society,” he declared.

The group gained nationwide attention in April 2024 after staging a rally in Hamburg attended by more than 1,200 people, where demonstrators accused the government of Islamophobia. Some participants carried placards reading “The caliphate is the solution,” sparking public outrage and widespread debate.

According to the ministry, Muslim Interaktiv is accused of rejecting women’s rights and promoting hostility towards Israel. The organisation will now be dissolved, and its assets confiscated.

Hamburg’s Interior Minister Andy Grote praised the move, describing it as a decisive step in protecting public order.

> “Authorities have successfully eliminated a dangerous and very active Islamist group,” he said.

Police also carried out related raids in Berlin and the state of Hesse, targeting two other organisations — Generation Islam and Realitaet Islam — as part of ongoing investigations into extremist activities.

Germany has a history of banning groups linked to extremist ideologies. In 2021, authorities dissolved the NGO Ansaar after it was accused of financing Islamist terrorism under the guise of humanitarian work.

The ban on Muslim Interaktiv marks another major crackdown as Germany intensifies efforts to curb the spread of radical movements within its borders.
