Abdulganiyu Obasa, son of the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, has officially taken over as Chairman of Agege Local Government following the resignation of his predecessor, Tunde Azeez.
The Agege Legislative Council, led by Hon. Adeshina Haruna, confirmed Azeez’s resignation on Tuesday, citing health challenges as the reason for his decision. Azeez had assumed office on July 26, 2025, but was forced to step aside after a brief medical leave.

As Vice Chairman, Obasa had been overseeing council affairs during Azeez’s absence and will now serve as the substantive chairman.
However, his ascension has sparked controversy among opposition groups, who allege that the transition was a product of political succession plans.

Before the July 12 local government election, Abdulganiyu Obasa’s nomination as the APC flagbearer was reportedly opposed by several party stakeholders. To ease tensions, Azeez was eventually presented as the party’s chairmanship candidate, with Obasa chosen as his running mate.
Barely months into the administration, Azeez’s health struggles and eventual resignation paved the way for Obasa’s emergence as chairman.

Reacting to the development, an APC chieftain in Agege, Rotimi Sulaiman, described Azeez’s decision as a “wise and selfless move,” praising his commitment to his health and the progress of the council
He also commended Obasa’s performance during Azeez’s absence, calling him a “visionary young man” who had shown leadership capacity in recent months.

“Agege is lucky to have both men,” Sulaiman said.
The development has reignited debates around political influence and succession dynamics within local governments in Lagos State.
