The Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) has welcomed the Federal Government’s newly announced nationwide prohibition on the export of wood and related products, describing it as a well-timed policy that will strengthen the country’s furniture manufacturing industry.

Speaking on behalf of MAN’s Wood and Wood Products/Furniture Sectoral Group, the Chairperson, Mrs. Ngozi Oyewole, said the decision demonstrates the government’s resolve to promote local production, encourage value addition, and protect the environment. She explained that keeping wood resources within the country would ease raw material shortages faced by local processors and furniture manufacturers, while also helping to moderate prices that have been affected by export-driven demand.

According to Oyewole, the policy underscores a clear understanding of how environmental sustainability, industrial development, and economic growth are closely linked. She noted that improved access to wood would not only enhance production capacity but also drive job creation, support small and medium-scale enterprises, and spur growth across the entire wood and furniture value chain.

She further stated that the export ban would make locally produced furniture more competitive in the Nigerian market and position finished products for stronger performance in international trade. Beyond its economic impact, Oyewole emphasized the environmental gains of the measure, pointing out that it would discourage illegal logging, reduce deforestation, and promote responsible forestry practices.

Describing the action as a decisive step toward long-term economic resilience, she said the Executive Order sends a strong signal of Nigeria’s commitment to industrialisation and sustainability. Oyewole concluded by assuring that manufacturers are ready to work closely with the Federal Government and relevant agencies to ensure effective implementation, compliance, and the sustainable management of forest resources.
