The Sokoto State Government has confirmed that missile strikes carried out by the United States military targeted terrorist strongholds within Tangaza Local Government Area of the state.
In a statement, the government said no civilian casualties have been recorded so far from the strikes in Tangaza and neighbouring Tambuwal Local Government Area.

According to the state government, the areas hit were believed to be hideouts of terrorists operating along the Nigeria–Niger border. Preliminary reports indicate that the operation was successful, with no harm to civilians.

The government added that it is still awaiting a comprehensive assessment from the Joint Operations team to determine the full impact of the strikes. It also noted that objects found near Jabo town in Tambuwal Local Government Area are still being analysed by Nigerian and US military authorities.
The strikes were carried out by the United States in collaboration with Nigerian authorities, with intelligence support provided by Nigeria and approval from President Bola Tinubu.

The Sokoto State Government expressed support for international defence partnerships aimed at tackling terrorism and cross-border crimes in the North-west region. It stated that such collaborations are crucial to restoring peace and safeguarding lives and property.

The government further disclosed that over the past two years, it has prioritised security by providing equipment and logistical support to security agencies combating banditry and terrorism.
Residents of affected areas were urged to remain calm and continue to cooperate with security agencies by providing useful information to support ongoing efforts to restore lasting peace and security across the state.

Tangaza Local Government Area, which borders the Republic of Niger, has faced persistent security challenges due to its porous borders, making it a strategic route for terrorist movements and arms smuggling. In recent years, the area has also witnessed the rise of armed groups imposing illegal taxes and enforcing their own form of authority on local communities.
