ECOWAS LIFTS SANCTIONS ON GUINEA

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has announced the immediate removal of all sanctions previously imposed on the Republic of Guinea.

The decision comes after Guinea successfully conducted elections, signaling the country’s return to constitutional and democratic rule. ECOWAS had suspended Guinea and imposed sanctions in 2021 following a military takeover and the suspension of democratic governance.

With the completion of the transition process and the emergence of an elected government, the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government approved the full lifting of sanctions and Guinea’s suspension from the regional body.

ECOWAS also congratulated Mamady Doumbouya on his election and formal inauguration as President of the Republic of Guinea.

According to the official communiqué, the Authority—after consultations led by its Chair, President Julius Maada Bio—resolved to immediately lift all remaining sanctions on Guinea and individuals involved in the transition. The regional bloc further approved Guinea’s full reintegration into ECOWAS decision-making bodies and regional integration programmes.

The statement encouraged the Guinean government to build on the restoration of constitutional order by deepening national dialogue among all stakeholders to promote inclusiveness, social harmony, and national unity ahead of the upcoming legislative elections and beyond.

ECOWAS leaders also urged the government to strengthen democratic institutions, uphold good governance and the rule of law, and accelerate economic and social development efforts.

In addition, the Authority congratulated President Doumbouya and encouraged him to pursue policies that foster social cohesion, national unity, and shared prosperity for the Guinean people.

The leaders further praised the ECOWAS Commission for its role in supporting Guinea’s transition to civilian rule and directed it to design initiatives aimed at assisting the country’s recovery and peacebuilding efforts.
