NIGERIAN ARMY RAISES ALARM, SAYS ‘THERE ARE MULTIPLE SUICIDE BOMBERS IN BORNO’

The Nigerian Army has raised fresh alarm over the possible presence of multiple suicide bombers in Maiduguri, Borno State, urging residents to avoid crowded areas following Monday evening’s deadly attacks that claimed 23 lives and injured 108 others.

According to Lt Col Sanni Uba, Media Information Officer of the Northeast Joint Taskforce Operation Hadin Kai, the explosions targeted busy public areas, including the Post Office, Monday Market axis, and the entrance to the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH), during the Iftar period.

“Troops, alongside the Nigeria Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal team and other security agencies, responded swiftly and secured the affected locations to prevent further harm,” he said. Emergency responders, including personnel from the National Emergency Management Agency, evacuated the injured to hospitals for urgent treatment.

Lt Col Uba warned that the terrorists may have deployed multiple suicide bombers in Maiduguri to carry out coordinated attacks at crowded spots. Security forces have intensified patrols, surveillance, and counter-IED measures to track down any remaining suspects and prevent further incidents. He urged the public to stay calm but vigilant, avoid crowded areas, and report suspicious activities immediately.

In response to the attacks, Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe State, Chairman of the Northern States Governors’ Forum, condemned the bombings as barbaric assaults on innocent lives. He extended condolences to the people of Borno State and commended security agencies for their prompt response. Governor Yahaya called for continued cooperation with security forces to confront terrorism and ensure regional stability.

Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume (Borno South) also condemned the attacks as barbaric and inhumane. He expressed sympathy for the victims, including those injured at Monday Market and UMTH, and praised security forces for their swift action. The Senator called on residents to remain alert, especially with Eid celebrations approaching, emphasizing that security is a collective responsibility.

Monday’s attack adds to a series of terrorist incidents in the state. In December 2025, a suicide bombing at Al-adum mosque in Gamboru Market killed five people and injured 35 others, highlighting the persistent threat posed by Boko Haram in Borno State.

Authorities continue rescue, medical, and security operations across the city as investigations into the attacks proceed.
